This review is intended as an educational resource for health professionals. It presents a background on the current research in biologic medicines and focuses on subsequent biosimilar medicines that have arisen in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The review concludes by highlighting key questions in the present use of biosimiliars and describes the recent controversy concerning their automatic substitution and indication extrapolation.
