Educational Series: Anticoagulation for the prevention of VTE in cancer surgery

In this review:

This review focuses on the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing surgery for cancer and reports on the current recommendations for VTE prophylaxis in cancer surgery from a number of international guidelines. Cancer patients are at significantly higher risk of developing VTE than individuals without cancer, and this risk is exacerbated in those undergoing surgery. Recent advances in surgical techniques, new VTE detection methods and particularly the introduction of pharmacological and mechanical VTE prophylaxis have demonstrated significant improvements in the risk of VTE for this patient group. This review is sponsored by an educational grant from Sanofi.
