Educational Series -Colloidal Oatmeal: Skin Moisturisation

This review provides an overview of colloidal oatmeal used as a skin moisturiser. Topics covered include
skin barrier function and the skin microbiome, the importance of moisturisation in maintaining skin barrier
function, colloidal oatmeal and its mechanism of action, and the role of colloidal oatmeal in the management
of several conditions including dry skin, atopic dermatitis, and cancer therapy-induced skin toxicity. The
importance of user education and preference in maintaining adherence to moisturising regimens is also
discussed.

Independent commentary has been provided by Dr Li-Chuen Wong, a consultant paediatric and
adult dermatologist. She works at Sydney Skin, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Medical Centre in
Newtown and is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Dr Wong is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and Head of Department at
The Children’s Hospital Westmead and Director of Training, NSW for all specialist dermatology
registrars.
