Speaker Series - Challenging the role of SABA in asthma: a UK perspective

This publication summarises a webcast presentation given by Dr John Haughney Clinical Director of the NHS
Clinical Research Facilities, Glasgow, on the 28th June, 2017. Additional information relating to Australian
asthma guidelines has been included where relevant to provide an Australian context, however this was not
part of the original webcast.

Dr Haughney discusses the need to change the way we manage asthma, in particular in relation to the overuse
of SABAs, in order to improve patient care and to get better patient outcomes. He outlines the dangers
associated with overuse of SABAs and discusses strategies to reduce or eliminate SABA overuse whilst
meeting best practice requirements according to both GINA and UK guidelines. He particularly focusses on
the use of the SMART strategy as a method of minimising SABA use and maximising patient outcomes, and
presents data supporting this approach. Dr Haughney also emphasises the importance of an individualised,
patient-centric approach, highlighting the need for effective and collaborative doctor/patient relationships.
